Sir Robert Ashton Lister established the R A Lister & company in Dursley, England in 1867 after a falling out with his father after an product exhibition in Paris. The vision was to conquer the market, and the company has gone to meet this vision and become global renowned manufacturer of Diesel engines. In 1909, the company acquired manufacturing rights in a London based firm to mass produce petrol driven engines. During the world war, R A Lister used its factory and its women workforce to focus on the war effort producing engines, lightings or munitions whilst the men went to the frontlines. After the war, the company rapidly expanded however Sir Lister sadly passed away in 1929. By 1936, Lister was producing 600 engines yearly of various sizes and models, with its most successful engine being the D type standing at 1.5hp at 700Rpm. By 1964, Quarter of a million D type engine were produced by 1964, and this engine is still quite popular and seen as vintage in todays market. Lister continued to supply a range of diesel engine parts, until 1986 when it merged with rivals Petters limited to form a new company called Lister Petter.
